During the ESCuela training session on 13 April, led by Anja Overdiek, participants got to grips with the SOcial Design Impact Method (SODIM). The method identifies leverage points within systems: areas where designers can achieve social impact. It provides the language, insight and tools to navigate dominant systems. In this blog, we look back at the insights from the day.

We began the day by clarifying the nuances: what do we mean when we talk about broad concepts such as ‘impact’ and a ‘system’? Impact, in particular, can sometimes be difficult for social designers to grasp and truly define within a design project, especially when it comes to lasting influence on existing systems such as healthcare or a local authority. SODIM can be used to determine the desired and possible influence that can lead to impact.

Furthermore, the method is ideally suited to establishing a shared understanding and commitment with stakeholders or a client. For example, to determine the focus of a project, or conversely to reflect on the impact achieved. This requires those involved to be sensitive to the positive or negative effects that planned or potential actions will have on those within the system. In doing so, SODIM lays the foundation for a Systemic Co-Design (SCD) project that requires a new language to transform relationships.[/vc_column_text]

[vc_column_text css=””]Pictures: Participants brainstorming with the SODIM canvas.

We then set to work on the first canvas from the SODIM. This addresses the question of what the relevant systems are that a project comes into contact with. By working this out in small groups for their own projects, it soon became clear that it is quite difficult to determine which systems you are actually working with. The SODIM method (Overdiek & van der Touw, 2024) itself uses the definition: ‘a system consisting of multiple components (people, places, organisations…) that are all interrelated and share a common goal.’ Anja gave examples of systems that help to illustrate this definition, such as a local council or a hospital.

One participant commented: “I appreciated Anja’s clear explanation and guidance in completing the canvases. What I found most valuable was getting to know the method and the structure it offers for examining the impact of social design at different levels.”

We then moved on to ‘leverage points’, or specific points within a system where small changes have a significant impact on the whole (Meadows, 1997). One such lever area, for example, is the system goal. Anja uses the example of a hospital as a system. At present, the system goal there is to treat sick people, but if this were to change to keeping healthy people healthy, the entire system would need to be overhauled. [/vc_column_text]

[vc_column_text css=””]Pictures: Anja explaining the four concentric leverage points (left). Participants identifying roles, places and structures they encounter in the various leverage points (right).

The method really comes to life in the afternoon during a system constellation, which we create using the method as a blueprint. By now, the participants are able to interpret systems effectively. Marjolein Vermeulen of MV design (who co-designed the method alongside four other agencies) joins us with a case study from her practice. Rings had been drawn on the floor, representing the embedded leverage areas. This added a new layer to the visibility and physical experience between different stakeholders and the leverage areas themselves. And it led to new insights, such as the fact that in a project it is important to focus on multiple leverage areas. For instance, in area-based initiatives, actors involved in social relations often require resources that can only be unlocked by actors at the level of system goals and visions.

Marjolein: “It’s exciting because the SODIM method always reveals something you, as a designer, were less consciously aware of. Do you dare to look at it? Blind spots come into view, as do system goals, which you can then act upon.” [/vc_column_text]

[vc_column_text css=””]Pictures: Participants during the system constellation on impact areas: a way to promote the reflexivity of the system.

After experiencing two constellations, we discussed the use of this approach in a project: are you comfortable doing this yourself with a client and representatives? We discussed the concern that it might provide insights that are too moment-dependent and could feel too subjective to base design or process choices on. Participants with little or no practical experience of constellations in particular shared this feeling. For more experienced constellation facilitators, it seems more natural to rely on the wisdom inherent in this method. Anja encouraged us, in particular, to experiment with combining SODIM with other working methods that utilise creativity, space and ‘co-creation’. This requires sensitivity to how those involved relate to one another.

In the context of monitoring SCD processes, SODIM can also be effectively used as a baseline assessment at the start of a project and reapplied periodically for monitoring or evaluation.

Conclusion

The Social Design Impact method offers a shared language for discussing systems and impact. Moreover, it provides a tool for navigating and making an impact in interaction with dominant systems. Whether you use the method to define the focus at the start of a project, or to reflect afterwards on what has been achieved, the structure helps to get a grip on something that would otherwise remain elusive. What the training made tangible is how effectively the method works when applied collaboratively. It is only when you engage in dialogue with others about the systems you work within, and also give space to feelings, that it becomes clear just how complex and rich that context actually is.

The Social Design Impact method builds on Anna Birney’s model (2012) and was developed by researchers from the Cybersocial Design research group (Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences) and the HEMD research group (Utrecht University of Applied Sciences), and is applied in both education and practice.
